5 Ways to Improve Your Motivation for Training

How to Get Over the Training Hump

It happens to the best of us. You had good intentions, trained for a few months, and then hit a wall…the motivation to get to the dojo just isn’t there like it used to be. But that does not mean your journey in martial arts is finished! Instead, you can find that motivation again and get yourself back on track. Here at Innovative Martial Arts Academy, we have seen students have this setback, and with these five tips, you will be back on the mat in no time!

Get Inspired

It’s normal to lose your motivation. Maybe all you need is a little inspiration? All athletes need inspiration from time to time. In fact, if you were to ask any great athlete who inspires them, they would reply with someone in their field, past or present. Everyone has someone they admire and strive to be like or achieve the same outstanding achievements. Try watching current martial artists online or someone that is at your dojo. Maybe you just need to revisit some classic movies or read a book on your favorite martial artist. Whatever the inspiration, find it and use that motivation to get inspired!

Take a Break

Have you ever heard of the Rest and Recovery Principle? It states that athletes should rest after a match/exercise to help their bodies recover and heal. So even though your body isn’t currently injured, maybe a little time off to rest and recover will do your mind some good. There is no shame in taking a small break. Make a plan for how long your break will last and when you plan to return to training – and stick to that plan. Give your body and mind time to rest so that when you come back, you will be ready and motivated to give it 100% in the dojo!

Create New Goals

It might be time to set some new goals. Setting a goal will give you a clear focus and help you practice new behaviors. First, focus on what you feel is a weaker area. Then, make a plan on how you will achieve that goal. This will be a great motivator to get you working hard in the dojo!

Track Your Progress

Tracking your progress can be a powerful motivator. Tracking your progress allows you to stay focused on your goals, so grab a notebook or your phone and start keeping track of your progress. This will be a great reminder that your hard work pays off!

Remember Your “Why”

Everyone has their reason for stepping into the dojo, so remember those “why (s)” and reconnect.

  • Why are you pursuing this activity?
  • What is your purpose?
  • Why do you care?
  • Why is martial arts in your life?

Getting in touch with the reasons you started your martial arts journey in the first place can help get you back on track. Maybe your “why” was to get fit or achieve a black belt. Whatever it may be, the sooner you remember and reconnect with it, the sooner you will have the motivation you have been missing!

This place is great! Charles and his team have fantastic programs for kids. When we started our 3.5 year old son, I didn’t know what to expect. He quickly adapted to the classes and now loves going. Our 2 year old son loves watching and will start as well as soon as he turns 3. Innovative Martial arts also hosted their birthday parties. The kids had a blast doing different activities throughout the birthday party. Can’t say enough good things about this place, and what they teach!

Innovative Martial Arts Academy (IMAA) is the best place to take martial arts. Charles Falk, the owner, and his staff do a great job teaching martial arts to the students and teaching each student to be confident and disciplined. My son has been with IMAA for eight years - he has earned one black belt and is working on his second.

Not only are the staff amazing, but there is a mix of fun and learning in the curriculum. My 5 year old daughter absolutely loves this school. She has learned respect and many other aspects making her more focused and well behaved. I definitely recommend this school for you or your child.

Great school with wonderful teachers. My daughter has a great time learning and everyone is friendly. There is even an adult class that allowed me to try to see if I liked it and everyone was very patient with me. I am thankful to have my daughter be a part of the Innovative Martial Arts Academy in Wake Forest and know she is benefiting from it in more than one way. It amazes me how fast she is learning and how hard she is trying. They have her trying to develop at her fullest with her mind, body, and spirit. I would recommend this school to anyone interested in martial arts.

Wonderful place for not only skill development but also personal development. Owner and instructors genuinely get to know students and families and care about them. The lessons learned will provide character growth as well as martial art skills. The owner is also a long time student of many different martial arts, he didn't just buy a franchise, and tries very hard to live what he teaches the students. Proud to have been in this dojo family for 6+ years and proud of the friendships we have made there!
