A double lapel grab is a common attack scenario in which an aggressor uses both hands to seize the front of your shirt, jacket, or other clothing, usually around the collar or ‘lapel’ area. This grab can feel intimidating because it gives the attacker a measure of control over your upper body and can lead to more harmful actions like headbutts, knee strikes, or even throws. Fortunately, our instructors at IMAA can teach you straightforward self-defense strategies you can use to break free from this situation and protect yourself.
Understanding the Double Lapel Grab
When someone grabs both of your lapels simultaneously, they aim to dominate you physically and psychologically. It might feel as though you have no escape because they are in close range, have two secure gripping points, and can easily pull you off balance. This type of grab is particularly common in altercations where the aggressor wants to threaten or intimidate you. The good news is that understanding how to respond can help you stay safe.
Key Principles of Self-Defense
Always be mindful of your environment and the people around you. If you see someone acting aggressively or moving into your personal space, prepare yourself mentally and physically before they can grab you.
Maintaining your balance is crucial when defending against a grab. Bend your knees slightly and ground yourself by distributing your weight evenly across both feet. This prevents the attacker from easily pushing or pulling you off-balance. Remember, like all aspects of self-defense, these techniques require repetition and muscle memory. Train regularly under the guidance of a qualified instructor to perfect your form and timing.
Technique: Weave and Distance
One of the simplest ways to address a double lapel grab is to focus on the attacker’s wrists and breaking their grip:
- Establish a Strong Base: Assume a balanced stance with your knees slightly bent and your bodyweight centered.
- Weave: You want to ‘weave’ your arm in between the attacker’s wrists on the inside. Using your forearm you can push the attacker’s arm in at the elbow making them bend, dropping their shoulder and throwing their grip off.
- Lift out: With your other arm (the one you didn’t use for the weave), grab the attacker’s other elbow, with the arm you used to weave you can grab the attacker’s wrist (both hands will be grabbing the attackers arm) The goal is to torque their arm so they break the hold on your lapels.
- Create Distance: As soon as you feel their grip weaken, step backward or pivot to the side to create distance.
This technique disrupts the attacker’s grip and gives you a chance to reposition yourself safely. If you want a video tutorial on how to do this check our social media.
Post-Defense Considerations
Once you’ve broken free from a double lapel grab, put distance between yourself and the attacker to reduce the chance of a follow-up. If a confrontation has occurred, seek assistance from bystanders or contact authorities if the situation warrants.
Remember that self-defense is about preparation, awareness, and decisive action. By focusing on solid fundamentals: good stance, wrist control, leverage, and effective strikes. You stand a far better chance of escaping safely when you learn self-defense techniques like this one.
